Standard keys have teeth cut on one or both edges of the blade. They are cut using a standard key duplicating machine that traces the original key's profile and cuts the blank to match. These keys are found on most vehicles through the early 2010s and on many economy vehicles today.
Standard keys are cheaper to duplicate ($75-$150 with transponder programming) because the cutting machines are widely available and the key blanks cost less. The physical security of standard keys is lower - they can potentially be duplicated from a photograph.
Laser-cut keys have a winding channel milled into the flat surface of the blade rather than teeth on the edge. This channel fits a corresponding pattern inside the lock cylinder. The name "sidewinder" comes from the snake-like path the groove follows.
Laser keys offer higher physical security because the groove pattern is more complex and harder to pick or impression. They require a CNC-style key machine that mills the groove to precise depth specifications. This equipment costs more, so laser key duplication runs $150-$250 with programming.
Brands commonly using laser keys in Port St Lucie vehicles: Ford (since 2010+), Honda (some models), Toyota/Lexus (higher trims), BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Volvo.
Look at your existing key. If it has teeth like a house key on one or both edges, it is standard cut. If it has a smooth winding groove carved into the flat blade surface, it is laser cut. Not sure? Call us with your year, make, and model - we will tell you immediately.
